RY-EA-BW3 Yellow ABS Eyewash Bowl with Single Central Drain Outlet

Product Overview

The RY-EA-BW3 is a plain yellow eyewash bowl moulded in ABS: a round shallow basin with a smooth interior and one large central drain outlet, with no perforated strainer ring formed into the base. The drain is taken by a separate fitting, and the strainer — if the station uses one — is part of that fitting. It is supplied as a bowl only, for stations where the existing drain fitting and spray head are sound and only the basin needs replacing, and it is the version to choose when the bowl has to be cleaned out thoroughly at every service.

One Big Hole: The Trade Against a Built-In Strainer

This bowl has no strainer of its own. Whether that is an advantage depends entirely on how the station is maintained.

Where it wins. A single large outlet drains fast, so it is much harder to make this bowl overflow at full flow than one whose only path to the drain is a ring of small perforations. And with no perforations in the way, the basin can be wiped and swabbed out properly — there is nowhere for hair, lint or residue to lodge. On a station where the bowl has to be cleaned to a standard, or where the flush water carries something that must not sit in the basin, that is the better shape.

Where it loses. Everything that goes into this bowl goes into the drain unless a separate strainer is fitted. Dropped parts, swabs, debris and scale travel into the drain line, and a blockage there is far harder to clear than one in the bowl. The bowl itself never looks wrong: it drains, so nobody investigates until the waste line is properly choked. So if the station's drain fitting has no strainer, or the strainer has been lost, this bowl is quietly passing the problem downstream.

The drain boss carries the joint. The outlet is a moulded boss, and the drain fitting screws into it. Over-tightening, or a fitting that does not sit flat on the boss face, cracks or distorts it — and a crack there leaks under the bowl, which is almost always misdiagnosed as a failed washer. Fit with a fresh washer, hand plus a part turn, and check the boss face for moulding flash before the fitting goes in.

Compatibility is the ordering risk. A bowl-only part is only as good as the fit: the drain boss thread, the bowl diameter and the mounting pattern all have to match what is already on the station, and none of them can be adjusted. Measure before ordering, or send the old part.

Material limits. ABS does not corrode and takes a smooth, wipeable finish, which is why it is used here. It is also temperature-limited — a hot flush can distort a bowl that has already been stressed at the boss — and it degrades under sustained UV, so it belongs indoors on a tepid supply.

Key Features

  • Plain yellow ABS bowl with a smooth interior and no perforated strainer ring.

  • Single large central drain outlet that empties the basin quickly at full flow.

  • Fully wipeable basin with nowhere for hair, lint and residue to lodge.

  • Drain taken by a separate fitting, so the strainer can be chosen, cleaned or replaced independently.

  • Moulded drain boss that accepts the existing fitting with a fresh washer.

  • Non-corroding material, so standing water between tests leaves no rust stain.

  • Light weight that does not load a plastic bracket or thin bench top.

  • Bowl only, so a sound spray head, drain fitting and bracket are reused.

  • Individual protective packing, so the moulded face arrives without scuffs.

Fitting

  1. Isolate the station supply, lock the valve off, and remove the spray head and drain connection before releasing the bowl.

  2. Measure the old bowl — diameter, drain boss position and mounting pattern — against the new one before fitting; a bowl-only part cannot be adapted.

  3. Check the drain boss face for flash or damage, fit the fitting with a fresh washer and tighten by hand plus a part turn.

  4. Confirm a strainer is present in the drain fitting; if the station has none, fit one before commissioning.

  5. Refit the spray head through the bowl, restore the supply slowly and run the station at full flow to confirm it drains without backing up.

  6. Re-check the nozzle height above the floor and the distance from the wall, and record the flow reading with the caps open.

Maintenance and Inspection

Weekly: operate the eyewash for at least three minutes and confirm the bowl empties completely, leaving no standing water.

Monthly: wipe the basin out fully, clear the drain strainer in the fitting, and check the boss and the joint for weeping.

Quarterly: check the bowl underside for cracking or heat distortion, confirm the drain runs freely, and check the mounting is firm.

Annually: replace the bowl if the boss is cracked, the moulding has gone chalky or the basin holds water, and check the waste line for debris carried through.

Standards and Compliance

The bowl is a component of an emergency eyewash; the installed station must meet ANSI Z358.1-2014 in full — fifteen minutes of flushing with tepid water at 20–37 °C, hands-free activation, nozzles at the required height above the floor and clearance from the wall, and unobstructed access within ten seconds of the hazard. A bowl that drains away the flushing water correctly is part of that performance, and a bowl that passes debris into a blocked waste line is not, however well it drains on the day. Bowl replacement does not by itself make a station compliant, and the height and clearance must be re-verified after fitting.

Applications

Replacement of cracked, distorted or discoloured bowls on ABS-bowl stations in laboratories and workshops; stations where thorough cleaning of the basin is required; and refurbishment where the drain fitting and spray head are serviceable and only the basin has failed.

Ordering

State the model RY-EA-BW3, the drain fitting size and type, and the make and model of the station it is to fit so the boss thread and mounting pattern can be checked. Confirm whether a drain fitting with a strainer is to be supplied with the bowl — this bowl has no strainer of its own. If the station is outdoors or is periodically flushed hot, specify a stainless bowl instead.
