A sock that hangs from straps collapses when the air goes light: the mouth folds, the cone droops and the indicator says nothing just when the wind is weakest. This unit solves that with a rigid metal ring at the mouth, held on a bracket bolted to the pole, so the intake stays round and the cone lifts and extends as soon as there is any air at all.
The pole is galvanised steel with a bolted base plate reinforced by gussets — a permanent outdoor installation rather than something that gets moved. The cone is the standard red and white segmented layout, replaceable on the ring without touching the pole.
The mouth stays open – a fabric mouth collapses in light air; a steel ring does not, so the cone begins to lift earlier and the indicator reads through the low-wind range.
Consistent reading – with a fixed mouth diameter, the extension of the cone relates to wind speed in a repeatable way, shift after shift.
Longer sock life – the load is carried by the ring instead of the fabric edge, which is where a strapped sock wears out first.
Simple sock change – the cone is fastened to the ring and swapped on its own.
Rigid metal ring – circular frame with a cross member, sized to the cone mouth.
Pivot bracket – bolted to the pole top so the ring and sock turn together into the wind.
Galvanised steel pole – corrosion-protected column for permanent outdoor service.
Gusseted base plate – square plate with welded gussets and bolt holes for anchoring.
Red and white cone – segmented layout, fastened to the ring.

| Installation | Bolt base plate to a concrete foundation, stand pole, fit frame and sock |
Prepare a concrete foundation or existing plinth able to take the pole and wind load at the chosen height.
Position the base plate, check it is level, and anchor through the bolt holes.
Stand the pole, check plumb, then tighten the base fixings fully.
Bolt the ring bracket to the pole top and confirm the assembly rotates freely through a full circle.
Fasten the cone to the ring, mouth square to the frame, and check it hangs and lifts evenly.
Monthly: check the pivot turns freely, the ring is not distorted, and the cone is still fastened at every point.
Quarterly: inspect the galvanised pole and base for coating damage or rust at the fixings; touch in as required.
Annually: check anchor bolts for tightness and the ring bracket for wear; renew a faded or torn cone.
After storms: confirm the pole is still plumb and the ring has not been bent; a distorted ring changes how the cone reads.
The unit provides a segmented wind direction indicator with a fixed mouth area, which is what allows extension to be read against wind strength. Being unlit, night visibility depends on site lighting or vehicle headlamps. Foundation design, pole height, anchoring and siting relative to the hazard or approach, plus any local requirements for wind indicators, must be confirmed for each installation.
Ports and terminals, construction and heavy lift sites, chemical and petrochemical plants, quarries, and permanent outdoor locations where a wind indicator has to work reliably in light air.
Order by model RYWS-RW-R01. Please state pole height, cone length, foundation type and whether a ring frame or a strap-hung cone is preferred. Strap-hung versions with swivel and base plate, solid reflective cones and an illuminated red and white assembly with LED floodlights are also available.
