Product Overview

The red and white sock is the shape most people picture when they hear the word windsock, and for a reason: the alternating colours are what make the cone readable against a bright sky, a grey apron and a green treeline on the same day. This is the spare cone for masts already in service — base colour layout unchanged, four red webbing straps, swivel snap hook, reinforced mouth. No pole, no bracket, no lamp.

Renewing the sock rather than the assembly keeps the mast, frame and any lighting exactly as they are, and it restores the contrast the indicator depends on once the fabric has faded or the mouth has started to split.

Why the Red and White Layout

  • Contrast against more than one background – red and white separate cleanly from sky, concrete and vegetation, which a single colour cannot do in every direction.

  • Bands give a length scale – with alternating segments the eye can judge how far the cone is extended, and therefore the approximate wind strength, not just the direction.

  • Recognised at a glance – crews, drivers and pilots read this layout without being taught it, which matters at a site boundary shared with visitors.

  • Straightforward renewal – the same layout on the replacement keeps the mast reading the same way it did before the swap.

Construction

  • Alternating red and white segments – sewn along the taper, with the hem turned to resist fraying.

  • Red webbing straps – four straps spread the load around the frame rather than pulling on a single point.

  • Swivel snap hook – clips to the frame eye and allows free rotation, so the cone points into the wind instead of hanging at an angle.

  • Reinforced mouth – stiffened intake edge that keeps the cone open when the air is light.

  • Light enough to fly – the fabric weight is kept low so the cone lifts and extends in light air rather than drooping.

Sizing the Replacement

  • Measure the ring diameter on the existing frame and the distance from the frame to the cone tip.

  • Match the mouth diameter first — an undersized cone will not seat on the frame, an oversized one will sag and read as a light wind.

  • Keep the length close to the original so the extension still corresponds to the wind speed it indicates.

  • State the mast height and the distance from which the sock has to be read, so the size suits the viewing distance, not just the frame.

Fitting

  1. Reach the frame using the mast's own provision; do not climb a pole that is not rated for it.

  2. Unclip the old cone from the swivel and slide the straps off the frame.

  3. Check the swivel turns freely and the frame eye is not worn through before fitting.

  4. Fit the four straps evenly so the mouth sits square, then clip the swivel hook.

  5. Confirm the cone hangs straight in calm air and swings to face the wind when it picks up.

Care and Maintenance

  • Monthly: check the mouth edge for splits, the straps and hook for wear, and the seams for opened stitching.

  • Quarterly: compare the red against a spare or a photograph — a faded red changes how the bands read at distance.

  • After storms: check seams and the swivel, and re-hang if the cone has been twisted around the frame.

  • Replace rather than patch when the mouth is torn; a repaired intake edge alters how the cone opens and therefore how it reads.

Standards and Compliance

This is a replacement cone for aviation-style wind direction indicators and keeps the red and white segmented layout those indicators are read by. Because the cone is unlit and carries no pole, the compliance of the complete installation depends on the mast, the lighting and the siting already in place, which should be confirmed when the sock is renewed.

Applications

Airports and airstrips, helipads, ports and terminals, construction and crane sites, chemical plants, and any facility renewing the sock on an existing windsock mast.

Ordering

Order by model RYWS-RW-01. Please state the cone length, the mouth diameter of the existing frame, and the quantity to be held as spares. An illuminated red and white assembly with stainless pole and dual LED floodlights is available separately; an orange and white and an orange reflective cone are also offered where site colours differ.
