Product Overview

An unlit windsock can still be read at night if it reflects light back to the person looking at it. This cone is solid orange with silver reflective bands wrapped around the body: headlamps from an approaching vehicle, a floodlight on a mast or a searchlight from the tower all pick the bands out, and the shape of the cone comes back as a bright outline against a dark sky.

It is a cone only — no pole, no bracket and no lamp — so it renews the fabric on a mast already in service, and it needs no cable, no isolator and no power at all.

Why Reflective Rather Than Lit

  • No power, no maintenance – nothing to wire, no lamp to fail, no supply to isolate before work at height.

  • Responds to the light that is already there – vehicle headlamps, site floodlights and tower searchlights are enough; the cone is bright exactly when someone is looking at it.

  • Solid orange reads as one shape – without colour segments, the eye judges how far the cone is extended rather than counting bands, which is a quicker read at distance.

  • Useful as a low-cost upgrade – an existing mast that is hard to see at night can be brought up to standard by changing the sock alone.

Construction

  • Solid orange body – high-visibility colour that stays distinct against sky, concrete and foliage.

  • Silver reflective bands – several bands wrapped around the cone, spaced along the tapered body.

  • Red webbing straps – four attachment straps spread the load around the frame instead of pulling on one point.

  • Swivel snap hook – clips to the frame eye and lets the cone rotate freely into the wind.

  • Reinforced mouth – stiffened intake edge that keeps the cone open in light air.

Choosing the Right Cone

  • Measure the frame ring diameter and the distance from the frame to the cone tip on the existing mast.

  • Match the mouth diameter first; a cone that is too small will not sit on the frame, and one that is too large will sag.

  • Keep the length close to the original so the amount of extension still corresponds to the wind speed it is meant to indicate.

  • State the viewing distance and the light sources involved (vehicle headlamps, fixed floodlights, tower searchlight) when ordering.

Fitting

  1. Access the frame using the mast's own provision; do not climb an unrated pole.

  2. Unclip the old cone from the swivel and slide the straps off the frame.

  3. Check the swivel turns freely and the frame eye is not worn through before fitting the new cone.

  4. Fit the straps evenly so the mouth sits square, then clip the swivel hook.

  5. Confirm the cone hangs straight in calm air and turns to face the wind when it rises; check the bands catch light from the main approach after dark.

Care and Maintenance

  • Monthly: check the mouth edge for splits, the straps and hook for wear, and the bands for lifting or peeling.

  • Quarterly: wash the bands with water only; abrasive cleaners and solvents dull the reflective surface.

  • After storms: check seams and the swivel, and re-hang if the cone has been twisted around the frame.

  • Replace when the bands no longer return light or the orange has clearly paled; both change how the cone reads at night.

Standards and Compliance

This is a replacement cone for aviation-style wind direction indicators, and it keeps the high-visibility treatment those indicators are read by, adding reflective bands rather than a light source. Because the cone is unlit, night visibility depends on there being a light source aimed at it — a mast with no floodlight and no traffic will not show the bands — so the lighting and siting of the complete installation should be confirmed when the sock is renewed.

Applications

Construction and highway sites, ports and terminals, airports and airstrips, helipads, chemical plants, crane and lifting operations, and any mast where a power supply for lighting is not available.

Ordering

Order by model RYWS-OR-01. Please state the cone length, the mouth diameter of the existing frame, quantity required as spares, and whether a lit version or a segmented orange and white cone is preferred instead. Complete assemblies with pole and LED floodlights are available separately.
