Product Overview

A segmented sock tells you two things at once: which way the wind blows, and roughly how hard. This set supplies that sock already mounted on a stainless steel pole with a round base plate, so a site with no mast can put a wind indicator up in one installation instead of sourcing a cone, a pivot and a pole separately.

The cone is orange and white, hung on red webbing straps from a swivel at the capped pole top. Nothing is illuminated, so the installation stays mechanical: anchor the plate, stand the pole plumb, hang the cone.

What Is in the Set

  • Orange and white cone – alternating segments, reinforced mouth, red webbing straps.

  • Swivel attachment – free rotation at the pole top, so the cone faces the wind.

  • Stainless steel pole – corrosion-resistant column with a capped top.

  • Round base plate – flat plate for bolting to a concrete plinth or steel deck.

Why a Segmented Sock

  • Direction and strength together – the number of segments still visible, and how far the cone is extended, both indicate wind strength, not just direction.

  • Contrast in two directions – orange against sky, white against darker structures; the pair reads where one colour alone would not.

  • Familiar at a glance – the layout is recognised by drivers, crane operators and visitors without instruction.

  • Cheap to renew – when the fabric fades, only the cone is replaced; pole, plate and swivel stay in service.

Key Features

  • Complete, ready to anchor – cone, swivel, pole and base plate supplied together and matched.

  • Stainless steel – pole and plate resist corrosion in coastal and chemical environments.

  • Capped pole top – keeps rain out of the tube and closes the pivot.

  • Bolt-down base – can be moved when the site layout changes, unlike a cast-in mast.

  • No power, no wiring – the set needs no supply, isolator or electrician.

Sizing

  • Choose the pole height from the distance the sock has to be read at, not from what looks tall; oversized poles make the cone small and its extension hard to judge.

  • Keep the cone long enough that a half-extended sock is still visibly different from a fully extended one.

  • State the reading distance, the mounting surface and any height restrictions (crane arcs, overhead lines) when ordering.

Installation

  1. Mark the position where the cone is visible from the approach or work area it serves, clear of doors, escape routes and vehicle paths.

  2. Bolt the base plate to a level plinth or deck using the plate holes as a template; check the fixings suit the substrate.

  3. Stand the pole and check it plumb before final tightening.

  4. Check the swivel turns freely through a full circle.

  5. Hang the cone with the reinforced mouth to the wind and confirm it hangs straight in calm air.

Care and Maintenance

  • Monthly: check the mouth edge for splits, the straps and swivel for wear, and the base fixings for looseness.

  • Quarterly: check the pole and plate for corrosion at the fixings; wash the cone with water only.

  • After storms: check the pole is plumb, the swivel free, and the cone not twisted around the top.

  • Replace the cone when the orange has paled or the mouth is torn; the pole and plate remain in service.

Standards and Compliance

The set provides a conventional segmented wind direction indicator, read by shape and extension. As it is unlit, night visibility depends on the site's own lighting or vehicle headlamps. Anchoring, pole height, siting relative to the hazard or approach and any local requirement for wind indicators should be confirmed at installation.

Applications

Construction and highway sites, quarries, ports and terminals, chemical plants, crane and lifting areas, and any location needing a quickly installed wind indicator.

Ordering

Order by model RYWS-OW-P01. Please state the pole height, cone length, fixing method and reading distance. The same cone is available on its own for existing masts; solid red reflective and red and white versions of both the cone and the complete set are also offered where site colours or night conditions differ.
