Product Overview

Windsocks fade faster than the masts they hang on. After a season of sun and wind the orange goes pale, the seams open at the mouth and the cone stops holding its shape in light air — and a pale sock is read as a light wind when the wind is actually stronger. This is the replacement part for that situation: a cone in alternating orange and white segments, with red webbing straps and a swivel snap hook, so a faded sock is swapped in minutes instead of the whole assembly being replaced.

It is a cone only. No pole, no bracket and no lighting are included, which is the point: the mast, frame and lamps already on site stay where they are, and only the fabric is renewed.

Why Keep a Spare Cone

  • Colour fade is a reading error – a washed-out sock is harder to tell from the sky and from distant structures; replacing it restores the contrast the indicator depends on.

  • Tears spread at the mouth – a small split at the intake edge grows until the cone no longer opens; a spare on the shelf closes the gap in one shift.

  • No downtime for the mast – the swivel hook and straps mean no tools and no work at height beyond reaching the frame.

  • One part, several sites – the same cone fits any frame of matching diameter, so a plant with several masts keeps one spare, not one assembly per mast.

Construction

  • Alternating orange and white segments – high-visibility colours that stay distinguishable against both sky and ground.

  • Red webbing straps – four attachment straps spread the load around the frame instead of pulling on one point.

  • Swivel snap hook – clips to the frame eye and lets the cone rotate freely so it points into the wind.

  • Reinforced mouth – the intake end is stiffened to hold the cone open in light air.

  • Stitched seams – sewn along the length and around the mouth, with the hem turned to resist fraying.

Choosing the Right Cone

  • Measure the existing frame: the diameter across the ring and the distance from the frame to the cone tip.

  • Match the mouth diameter first; a cone that is too small will not sit on the frame, and one that is too large will sag.

  • Keep the length close to the original: a much shorter cone reads as a stronger wind than it is.

  • State the mast height and the distance from which the sock must be read, so the size suits the viewing distance rather than just the frame.

Fitting

  1. Lower or access the frame with the mast's own provision; do not climb an unrated pole.

  2. Unclip the old cone from the swivel and slide the straps off the frame.

  3. Check the swivel turns freely and the frame eye is not worn through before fitting the new cone.

  4. Fit the straps evenly around the frame so the mouth sits square, then clip the swivel hook.

  5. Confirm the cone hangs straight in calm air and turns to face the wind when it rises.

Care and Maintenance

  • Monthly: check the mouth edge for splits, and the straps and hook for wear.

  • Quarterly: check colour fastness against a spare or a photograph; replace once the orange has clearly paled.

  • After storms: check seams and the swivel, and re-hang if the cone has been twisted around the frame.

  • Do not patch a torn mouth: a repaired intake edge changes how the cone opens and how it reads.

Standards and Compliance

The cone is a replacement part for aviation-style wind direction indicators: it keeps the segmented colour layout those indicators are read by, and it is sized to the frame it is ordered for. Because it carries no pole or lighting, the compliance of the complete installation depends on the mast, the lighting and the siting already in place, which should be checked when the cone is renewed.

Applications

Airports and airstrips, helipads, ports and terminals, construction and crane sites, chemical plants, and any facility renewing the sock on an existing windsock mast.

Ordering

Order by model RYWS-OW-01. Please state the cone length, the mouth diameter of the existing frame, the attachment type required, and the quantity to be held as spares. Complete assemblies with pole and LED floodlights are available separately if the mast is also being replaced.
