The simplest form of the gravity eye wash: a 35 litre tank with a moulded handle on top, a yellow snap cover over the nozzles, and a pictogram label large enough to read from a couple of metres away. There is no frame, no castor and no bracket — it is set down where it is needed, or hung on a hook, and filled through the cap on the left shoulder.
The label carries the face and eyes graphic, a two-step drawing of cover-off and eyes-in, and the words EYE WASH. On a tank with no switch and no pipework, that label is the entire operating instruction.
Carried by one person – empty it weighs little; filled it can be moved short distances by the handle without a trolley.
Roughly three minutes – at a nominal 11.4 L/min eyewash flow, 35 L is about three minutes. Record the real figure and treat the unit as a first-response point.
No footprint to plan – no frame legs, no castors, no wall bracket; it sits on a bench, a shelf, a vehicle floor or a pallet.
Easy to store – the shape stacks against a wall and can be put away between campaigns.
Cheap to deploy widely – a tank per hazard area costs less than a station per hazard area.
35 L green HDPE tank – moulded body with ribbed sides for stiffness.
Carry handle – moulded into the top of the body.
Yellow snap cover – lifts off the nozzles in one movement and starts the flow.
Twin nozzles – set under the cover, angled for eye-level flushing.
Front label – face and eyes pictogram, two-step use drawing, EYE WASH lettering.
Fill cap – screw cap on the shoulder of the tank.

Fill through the screw cap with clean tepid water and close it firmly.
Place the tank on a stable, level surface at a height where a standing person can lean into the nozzles — a bench, a shelf or a pallet, not the floor.
Lift the yellow cover and check both nozzles run clear and even.
Time how long the tank lasts and mark the figure on the body.
Weekly: replace the water, run the unit briefly, wipe the nozzles and cover.
After use: refill the tank, refit the cover and return it to its marked position.
Weekly water change is the main task; standing water in a tank is where contamination starts.
Monthly: check the cover fit, the nozzles and the cap seal.
Quarterly: sanitise and rinse the tank; check the label is legible and the body free of cracks.
Annually: inspect the tank for crazing around the handle and cap.
ANSI Z358.1 asks for a fifteen-minute flush at eyewash flow; a 35 L gravity tank gives roughly three minutes, so it is a first-response unit that must lead to a plumbed station. The unit also has to be reachable within about ten seconds of the hazard, mounted or set at a workable height, filled with tepid water, changed weekly and clearly signed at the approach.
Workshops and maintenance points, spill kits and response vehicles, temporary and short-duration work, battery bays, paint mixing areas, stores and remote compounds.
