Product Overview

A combination shower and eyewash on a green column, freeze protected by a heated riser, with the electrical work gathered into a hooded explosion-proof cabinet and an alarm unit on top that combines a red beacon with a sounder.

Two details make this the outdoor version of the hazardous-area station: the hood over the cabinet, and the sounder. One keeps the weather off the enclosure that has to be opened for maintenance; the other makes sure that an activation is heard, not only seen.

The Hooded Cabinet

  • Rain and sun off the lid – the hood shelters the enclosure face, so the lid can be opened in wet weather without water running into the flange faces.

  • Cooler in service – shading keeps the surface temperature of the cabinet down, which matters where the ambient limit of the equipment is close.

  • Protects the labels – the warning and circuit labels stay legible instead of bleaching or washing out.

  • Trade-off stated – the hood is a fixing point and a place for debris; it needs checking for corrosion and for nests, and it must not block the lid travel when opened.

Buttons, Beacon and Sounder

  • Red and green buttons – stop and start arranged as most operators expect, with a warning label beside them.

  • Beacon and sounder together – a red dome with an audible unit, so the alarm carries to people who are not looking in that direction.

  • Mounted high on the column – above head height, clear of the shower spray and visible over equipment.

  • Trade-off stated – a sounder is only useful if it can be heard over plant noise; test it in service, not on a quiet weekend.

Heat Tracing and Build

  • Traced riser – heating cable along the column keeps standing water above freezing; the riser stays full so flow is at rate on opening.

  • Flanged connections – on the column side and near the foot, positions per drawing.

  • Stainless shower head and basin – forward arm, twin eyewash nozzles.

  • Triangular pull rod – stainless, stay-open shower valve.

  • Green painted column – bolted base plate with earth point.

Installation

  1. Bolt the base plate to a pad; check the column is plumb and bond the earth point.

  2. Connect the flanged supply with an upstream isolation valve and flush the line.

  3. Bring cables in through the protected glands; check the cabinet marking against the area classification before energising.

  4. Check the hood does not foul the lid when opened, and that the drain path from the hood is clear.

  5. Set the trace thermostat, confirm the riser warms with the supply closed.

  6. Set both flows, then test the beacon and sounder from the far side of the area to confirm the alarm is audible and visible where people work.

Operation and Maintenance

  • Weekly: operate both functions, check flows, check the beacon and sounder, wipe basin and nozzles.

  • Monthly: inspect the hood, cabinet, glands and labels; clean out debris and check for corrosion under the hood.

  • Before frost: prove the trace with the supply closed; confirm the sounder is audible above winter plant noise.

  • Annually: insulation resistance test, internal inspection by a competent person, renewal of seals and any perished cable gland.

  • After any work: restore lid bolts, glands and earth, and refit the hood before the station returns to service.

Standards and Compliance

Designed to meet ANSI Z358.1-2014 for shower and eyewash flow, hands-free operation and simultaneous use. Explosion protection is governed by the equipment marking and the area classification and must be installed by a competent person; the hood does not change the enclosure rating and must not be drilled or modified. Freeze protection does not replace tepid water, and an alarm is an addition to — not a substitute for — a site rescue procedure.

Applications

Refineries and petrochemical plants, fuel depots and loading gantries, solvent and paint production, gas installations, and any outdoor classified position where the control gear must be sheltered from weather and the alarm must be heard.

Ordering

Order by model RYFHS-FR08. Please state area classification, supply voltage and phase, alarm type required (beacon only, or beacon with sounder), lowest ambient temperature, inlet size and whether a tepid water mixing valve is needed. The non-hooded hazardous-area station, the BT4 and BT5 variants and the frost-valve station are also available.
