Product Overview

A combination shower and eyewash built for sites that freeze. The column is square-section steel, painted green, carrying a stainless shower head on a forward arm, a stainless eyewash basin with twin nozzles, and a triangular pull rod for the shower valve. On the riser there is a frost valve: when the supply is shut off, it opens and drains the water standing in the column so there is nothing left in the pipe to freeze and split.

That single component is the difference between a station that survives a winter and one that is found cracked in the spring. It is the reason this model exists as a separate item rather than as an option on the standard station.

How the Freeze Protection Works

  • Drains on shut-off – closing the supply lets the frost valve open, and the riser empties instead of holding water at the top of the column where it freezes first.

  • No heat tracing needed – nothing electrical on the unit, so no cable to damage, no thermostat to fail, no supply to lose in a power cut.

  • Fails in the safe direction – if the valve sticks, the usual result is a wet base, not a split column.

  • Still needs a fall – the drain has to have somewhere to go: a gravel sump, a channel or a soakaway under the base plate.

Construction

  • Green square steel column – painted, with a bolted base plate for a plinth or concrete pad.

  • Stainless shower head – on a forward arm, sized for full-body coverage.

  • Triangular pull rod – stainless rod with a triangular handle, reachable at any height.

  • Stainless eyewash basin – twin nozzles with yellow and green caps.

  • Frost valve on the riser – the freeze protection, mounted mid-column.

Installation

  1. Set the unit on a concrete pad or plinth; bolt the base plate down and check the column is plumb.

  2. Provide drainage under the base — gravel sump or channel — so the frost valve has somewhere to discharge.

  3. Connect the supply with an isolation valve upstream; the frost valve only protects when the supply can be shut off.

  4. Set the shower flow and the eyewash flow; both must reach the figures in the table above.

  5. Close the supply and watch the frost valve discharge: water should run out and stop, leaving the riser empty.

  6. Check the pull rod opens and latches the shower, and that the eyewash nozzles run clear.

Operation and Winter Care

  • Normal use: pull the triangular handle for the shower, press the eyewash plate for the eyes; both stay on without being held.

  • After use: close the supply, let the frost valve drain the riser, and confirm water has stopped running from the drain.

  • Weekly: operate both functions, check the drain discharges, wipe the basin and nozzles.

  • Before frost: test the frost valve deliberately, check the drain path is clear of ice and debris, and confirm the upstream isolation valve turns freely.

  • After frost: check the column and valve body for splits, and re-test both functions before the station is relied on again.

Standards and Compliance

Designed to meet ANSI Z358.1-2014 for shower and eyewash flow, hands-free operation and simultaneous use. The standard also expects tepid water: a freeze-protected unit still needs a supply that does not arrive at freezing temperature, since cold water delays rather than helps flushing. Siting within about ten seconds of the hazard, weekly activation, signage and a clear approach remain site responsibilities, and the drain under the base must be kept open for the freeze protection to work.

Applications

Outdoor process areas, tank farms and loading bays, unheated warehouses and cold stores, construction and quarry sites, water treatment works, and any plant where a station stands below freezing for part of the year.

Ordering

Order by model RYFHS-FR01. Please state inlet size, whether a tepid water supply or mixing valve is required, and the drainage arrangement available at the base. Standard (non-freeze) combination stations, stainless versions, and wall-mounted eye washes are also available.
