RY-EA-FR1 Flow-Regulating Eyewash Nozzle Head with Tethered Yellow Cap

Product Overview

The RY-EA-FR1 is a single eyewash nozzle head with a flow-adjustable face: a green moulded plastic body whose face carries two central flushing orifices surrounded by a field of fine perforations, a yellow cap tethered to the body on a loop, and two bosses on the underside of that cap positioned to sit over the orifices. It screws onto the spray head or manifold on a male thread at its base. It is used where the delivered flow has to be trimmed to suit the supply — for example to balance two nozzles on one head, or to bring a station into its flow band without changing the pipework.

Adjustment Is Useful — and Invisible

A nozzle that can be adjusted solves a real problem and creates a quieter one, and the quieter one is what fails an inspection.

Why adjustment helps. Supplies vary. Two nozzles on one head rarely deliver identical streams, and a station fed at the low end of its pressure band may need the orifices opened wider to reach its required flow. A head that can be trimmed lets the installer balance the pair and set the station inside its band without re-piping or changing the pump.

Why adjustment is dangerous. The setting has no gauge and no marking. Whoever trims the nozzle leaves behind a position that the next person cannot read, and a nozzle throttled too far still looks like a nozzle: it is in place, the cap is on, the station appears complete. The next flow test then fails, and the fault is hunted through the supply, the strainer and the valve before anyone thinks to look at the head. If this head is used to trim flow, the setting must be recorded at commissioning and marked on the head, and the flow test must be done at that setting — not with the nozzle wound open "to see if it helps".

Two kinds of hole, two jobs. The two central orifices carry the flushing streams that have to reach the eyes, while the surrounding field of fine perforations produces the soft outer pattern that keeps the flush tolerable. The fine holes block first, on scale and on debris, and when they do the pattern goes from a soft sheet to two hard jets — which is exactly the condition that makes a casualty pull away from the eyewash. Cleaning the face, not just the orifices, keeps it usable.

The tether keeps the cap, but not the habit. A tethered cap cannot be dropped into the bowl or pocketed, which is the point of the loop. It can, however, be left dangling across the face, and the loop itself can snag on the head or on a hose. The cap must be clear of the orifices whenever the station is in use — a cap resting over the face gives one eye a partial stream, which is worse than an obvious failure because the user may not notice.

Plastic on a tepid line. The body does not corrode and the fine perforations mould cleanly, which is why this shape is made in plastic. It is temperature-limited — a hot flush can distort a face whose whole function depends on the size of its holes — and it degrades under sustained UV, so it belongs on an indoor station.

Key Features

  • Adjustable face allowing the delivered flow to be trimmed to suit the supply and to balance a pair of nozzles.

  • Two central flushing orifices with a surrounding field of fine perforations for a soft outer pattern.

  • Yellow cap on a tether loop, so it stays with the head and cannot be dropped into the bowl.

  • Two bosses on the cap underside positioned over the orifices to cover them between uses.

  • High-visibility yellow against the green body, so an open cap reads at a glance.

  • Male threaded base for direct fitting to the spray head or manifold.

  • Green body that shows white scale, making a neglected face obvious.

  • Moulded plastic with no metal in the water path, so nothing corrodes at the threads.

  • Individual packing, suitable for spare-part stock.

Fitting

  1. Isolate the station supply, lock the valve off and release pressure before removing the old nozzle.

  2. Check the thread by hand for full engagement, and confirm the cap and tether are intact before fitting.

  3. Fit by hand plus a part turn; do not use a wrench on the moulded body or use the tether as a lever.

  4. Set the face for the required flow, then operate the station and measure at the nozzle to confirm it is inside its band.

  5. Record the setting and mark it on the head, so the position can be restored after cleaning.

  6. Check the aim and confirm the cap can be parked clear of both the orifices and the bowl, then log the flow reading.

Maintenance and Inspection

Weekly: operate the station for at least three minutes, confirm the pattern is a soft sheet with two full streams, and check the setting has not been altered.

Monthly: clean the face — orifices and fine perforations — with a soft brush; check the tether loop and the cap bosses for damage.

Quarterly: descale the face by soaking, re-check the flow at the recorded setting, and confirm the aim is unchanged.

Annually: replace the head if the face is distorted, the perforations cannot be cleared, the tether has failed, or the thread no longer holds the aim.

Standards and Compliance

This head is a component of an emergency eyewash; the installed station must meet ANSI Z358.1-2014 in full — fifteen minutes of flushing with tepid water at 20–37 °C, hands-free activation, nozzles at the required height above the floor and clearance from the wall, unobstructed access within ten seconds of the hazard, and a controlled twin stream at a velocity the casualty can tolerate. An adjustable nozzle does not replace a measured flow test: the station must be verified at the setting actually used, and that setting has to be recorded, because an unrecorded adjustment is indistinguishable from a fault. Covers must be present and functional, and a cap left over the face during use is a finding.

Applications

Stations where the supply pressure sits near a band limit and the flow needs trimming, twin heads where two nozzles must be balanced, replacement of fixed nozzles with a serviceable adjustable type, and spare-part stock for maintenance teams.

Ordering

State the model RY-EA-FR1, the base thread size or the make and model of the head it is to fit, and the quantity. Confirm whether spare caps or tethers are to be included. If the adjustment is being bought to solve a low-flow problem, describe the measured supply pressure and the flow actually achieved — a nozzle that throttles cannot create flow that the supply is not delivering, and trimming the face wider will not fix an undersized line.
