RYFHS-FR13 Explosion-Proof Heat-Traced Shower and Eyewash with Ex Switch and Push-Button Station and Floor Drain Leg

Product Overview

The RYFHS-FR13 is a floor-mounted combination emergency drench shower and eyewash for classified, frost-exposed outdoor areas. The electrical arrangement uses two separate enclosures on the column: an upper flameproof enclosure carrying the rotary isolating switch, and a lower enclosure carrying the push-button station with its red and yellow buttons. Keeping switching duty and operator control in separate housings means the isolator can be locked off without exposing the control buttons, and a fault in the control circuit does not require the isolator housing to be opened. Below the eyewash bowl the unit carries a stainless steel drain leg that runs straight down to a floor flange, so the bowl discharges directly into floor drainage instead of through a separate waste connection at the base of the column.

Why the Drain Leg Matters — and Where It Fails

The floor drain leg is the detail that decides whether this station works on a given site. Where the floor is sloped to a gully and the station stands over it, the leg gives a short, visible, easily rodded discharge path with no buried connection to trace or protect. Where the floor is flat, or drains away from the station, the leg simply ends at a flange with nowhere to go and the bowl will overflow at the first test. The leg is also a wet section below the bowl that sits outside the traced column: in a hard frost it can hold water and split unless it drains completely after each use or is traced separately. On sites where the discharge must not enter storm drainage — because the flush water may carry the chemical that caused the injury — the leg must be routed to a contained drain, not to the yard gully.

Key Features

  • Green powder-coated square column with stainless steel 304 shower arm bracket, eyewash bowl and drain leg.

  • Two separate electrical enclosures: upper flameproof housing for the rotary isolating switch, lower housing for the push-button station.

  • Push-button station with red and yellow buttons for local control, mounted at standing height below the isolator.

  • Three cable entries at the underside of the lower enclosure, with conduits dressed down the column clear of the bowl.

  • Stainless steel drain leg from the eyewash bowl to a floor flange, giving a direct discharge to floor drainage.

  • Self-regulating trace cable along the column and across the shower arm, with the thermostat set to 10 °C.

  • Stainless steel 304 umbrella shower head and twin-nozzle bowl with flip covers, matched to ANSI Z358.1 flows.

  • Stainless pull rod with triangular handle for hands-free shower activation; push plate for the eyewash.

  • Stainless base plate with four anchor holes; the drain flange is separate from the structural base and must be set to the finished floor level.

Installation and Commissioning

  1. Set the base plate on a level pad and anchor through the four holes; position the unit so the drain leg lands inside or immediately above the floor gully.

  2. Set the drain flange to finished floor level and seal it; confirm the leg falls vertically with no horizontal offset that would trap water.

  3. Connect the 1 inch inlet and flush the line for several minutes with the strainer removed before the unit is put into service.

  4. Land the supply and the trace tail in the lower enclosure entries, close the glands and form drip loops below the boxes.

  5. Set the thermostat to 10 °C, energise the circuit and confirm the switch and the push buttons operate freely with the enclosures closed.

  6. Open the shower and the eyewash in turn and watch the drain leg: it must carry the full eyewash flow without backing up at the bowl.

Operation and Maintenance

Weekly: operate the shower and the eyewash for at least three minutes and confirm the bowl drains away completely, with no standing water left in the leg.

Monthly: check the drain flange and the floor around it for leakage; confirm the isolator turns and locks and both push buttons move freely.

Quarterly: isolate the circuit, open both enclosures and check terminal torque and gasket condition; rod the drain leg if flow has slowed.

Annually: megger the trace circuit, verify the thermostat, and inspect the drain leg for frost damage at the start of the cold season.

Standards and Compliance

The shower head and eyewash are designed to ANSI Z358.1-2014 figures: 15 minutes of flushing with tepid water at 20–37 °C, hands-free activation, and a location within ten seconds of the hazard. Heat tracing keeps the column and the shower arm from freezing; it does not warm the flushing water, and it does not protect the drain leg below the bowl, which is a wet section outside the traced path. Both electrical enclosures, the glands and the trace circuit must be selected for the gas group and temperature class of the zone, and the Ex marking on each nameplate must be checked against the area classification drawing before energising. Discharge from the drain leg must be routed to a drainage point permitted by the site's environmental rules.

Applications

Loading bays, drum filling areas, pump skid platforms and outdoor process areas in cold climates where the station stands over a floor gully and the surrounding area is classified. It suits sites that want the isolator and the operator controls in separate housings, and that prefer a visible, rodable drain rather than a buried waste line.

Ordering

State the model RYFHS-FR13, the zone classification and required gas group and temperature class for both enclosures, the supply voltage and phase, the trace length, and the height from the finished floor to the bowl so the drain leg is cut to length. Confirm that a floor gully exists within the footprint of the unit or that the leg will be extended to a contained drain. The photograph shows the standard green column with stainless drain leg; the button colours and the number of cable entries can be varied on request, and the Ex ratings must be confirmed in writing — they must not be read from the photograph.
