Product Overview

A BT5 rated combination shower and eyewash with a heated riser and one small explosion-proof switch box on the column. Stainless shower head and basin, green square column, triangular pull rod, bolted base plate — and no other electrical parts on the unit.

That is the design idea here: keep everything the station needs in a hazardous area down to a single protected switch, and leave the trace setting to a control point the plant already looks after.

Why a Single Switch

  • Fewest protected parts – one enclosure means one set of glands, one lid, one seal, and nothing else to open during an inspection.

  • Local isolation – the person working on the trace can isolate it at the station, which is what most permit-to-work procedures expect.

  • Nothing electronic outdoors – no display or thermostat in the weather; the setpoint stays in the plant room, where it is already on a round.

  • Less to corrode and to tamper with – a single small box attracts less attention than a cabinet, and there are fewer entries for water.

  • Trade-off stated – no local readout and no local alarm; a trace fault is found by feeling the column or by walking to the control point.

Explosion Protection and Tracing

  • BT5 rated equipment – T5 is a stricter surface temperature class than T4, for areas where lower ignition temperature gases or vapours may be present.

  • Marking governs – equipment group, gas group, zone and ambient range on the marking must match the installation; state the classification on the order.

  • Heated riser – trace protection keeps the water in the column above freezing; the riser stays full, so flow is at rate the moment the valve opens.

  • Power dependency – no supply means no protection; the circuit has to be labelled and proven before frost.

Construction

  • Green square column – painted steel, bolted stainless base plate with earth point.

  • Stainless shower head – forward arm, wide pattern.

  • Stainless eyewash basin – twin nozzles, PUSH sign on the bracket.

  • Triangular pull rod – stainless, stay-open shower valve.

  • Single Ex switch box – on the column, cable entering through a protected gland.

Installation

  1. Bolt the base plate to a pad; check the column is plumb and bond the earth point.

  2. Connect the supply with an upstream isolation valve and flush the line.

  3. Bring the cable into the switch box through its own gland; confirm the marking matches the area classification before energising.

  4. Set the trace thermostat at the plant-room control point and confirm the column warms with the supply closed.

  5. Set shower and eyewash flows to the table figures.

  6. Label the trace circuit at the board so it is not isolated by mistake.

Operation and Maintenance

  • Weekly: operate both functions, check flows, wipe basin and nozzles, confirm the switch is in its normal position.

  • Monthly: check the box, gland and cable cleats; look for water in the entry.

  • Before frost: prove the trace with the supply closed and check the plant-room setpoint against the record.

  • Annually: insulation resistance test and renewal of any gland or seal that has hardened.

Standards and Compliance

Designed to meet ANSI Z358.1-2014 for shower and eyewash flow, hands-free operation and simultaneous use. Explosion protection is governed by the equipment marking and the area classification; installation must be by a competent person. Freeze protection does not replace tepid water, and where the position is unlit the station still needs site lighting or the lit version. Siting within about ten seconds of the hazard and weekly activation remain site responsibilities.

Applications

Refineries, petrochemical and gas plants, solvent stores, fuel depots, dusty classified buildings, and traced outdoor positions where the plant already controls trace settings centrally.

Ordering

Order by model RYFHS-BT5-03. Please state area classification, supply voltage and phase, lowest ambient temperature, inlet size and whether a tepid water mixing valve is needed. The BT5 version with Ex floodlight and beacon, the dual-enclosure hazardous-area station and the frost-valve station are also available.
